VOLVO
ECM-217D - Long-term fuel trim, bank 2. Signal too low
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (1999–2006), XC90 (2003–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The long-term fuel trim for bank 2 has nearly reached its maximum at idle, which shows that the mixture is far from the target. The fault can come from high fuel pressure, leaking injectors, a damaged mass air flow sensor, the engine oil or a damaged oxygen sensor, and an air leak in the intake can give the same picture.
Possible causes
- Intake air leakage
- High fuel pressure
- Leaking fuel injectors
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
- Contaminated engine oil or oil level too high
- Damaged heated oxygen sensor on bank 2
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check the intake system for air leakage and that the hoses are fitted securely
- 3Check that the oil level is between the min and max marks on the dipstick, and that the oil is not contaminated
- 4Have a diagnostic tool? Read the long-term fuel trim for bank 2 in live data at idle with the engine warm, and see whether it sits close to its extreme position
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop measure the fuel pressure, check the injectors and replace the bank 2 oxygen sensor if needed
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
