What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named for a lower limit, it is set when the correction at idle has nearly reached its maximum. This can be caused by leaking injectors, a damaged mass air flow sensor, contaminated engine oil or too high an oil level, or by a damaged oxygen sensor.
Possible causes
- Leaking fuel injectors
- Damaged mass air flow sensor
- Contaminated engine oil
- Oil level too high
- Damaged oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the oil level against the dipstick and see whether the oil looks contaminated
- 2Have a workshop check the fuel pressure and see whether any injector leaks, by measuring the fuel and residual pressure
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the long-term fuel trim at idle with the engine warm, and see whether the value stays still near an extreme position
- 4If the other checks are done and the fault remains, have a workshop replace the oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
