Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it concerns the signal wire to the malfunction indicator lamp. The engine control module sets the code when it finds that the wire is shorted to voltage, shorted to ground or open. Depending on the fault, the lamp may then come on or stay off.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
What you can do
- 1Look at the lamp: if it lights while the engine runs, the signal wire may be shorted to ground
- 2Inspect the wire to the lamp for breaks and chafing
- 3Check the connectors in the wire to the lamp for play and corrosion
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire is not shorted to voltage or ground and is not broken
- 5If the wire is sound but the fault returns, have a workshop check it with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp comes on and may light while the engine runs
- The malfunction indicator lamp does not come on
