VOLVO
ECM-2214 - Glow plug relay control. Signal faulty. Intermittent fault
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes. The engine control module monitors the wire that runs to the glow plug relay, and the relay has its own internal check. The code is set if the fault lies in the signal wire, for example a short to voltage, a short to ground or an open circuit, or if the relay reports a problem with the glow plugs or its own internals. The glow plugs are then switched off.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Defective glow plug relay
What you can do
- 1Check the wire to the glow plug relay for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
- 2Check the connectors at the glow plug relay for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken or shorted to ground or voltage
- 4Have a diagnostic tool? Activate the glow plugs and listen for the relay to pull in
- 5If the wire is sound but the fault returns, have a workshop check the glow plug relay with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine is hard to start
What the fault can affect1
- The glow plugs are switched off
