What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks that the rear oxygen sensor registers a rich mixture, and at fuel shut-off the sensor should show a lean mixture. The code is stored if the sensor does not show a rich mixture, or if it is too slow to switch to lean. The cause can be a leak in the exhaust or an aged sensor.
Possible causes
- Leakage in the exhaust system
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the exhaust system for leaks at joints and seams
- 2Inspect the wiring to the rear oxygen sensor, and do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the connector
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the sensor value in live data with the engine at idle, and see whether it registers a rich mixture
- 4If nothing is found, have a workshop try a new rear oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
