What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the signal from the rear oxygen sensor and stores the code when the signal lies outside its permitted operating range, or when the heater voltage disturbs the signal. The fault can lie in a signal or earth wire shorted to the preheating circuit, or in the sensor. Control using the rear sensor is switched off, and so is the catalyst diagnosis.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to the preheating circuit
- Earth wire short-circuited to the preheating circuit
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Inspect the wiring to the rear oxygen sensor for damage and check that the wires are not shorted to each other
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the sensor wires are not shorted to each other
- 3Have a diagnostic tool? Read the sensor signal in live data with the engine warm, and see whether the value looks stable
- 4If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop try a new oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
What the fault can affect2
- Control using the rear oxygen sensor is switched off
- Catalyst diagnostics are switched off
