ECM-2221
VOLVO
ECM-2221 - Injection timing valve. Signal too low. Intermittent fault
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS40 (1996–2004), V40 (1996–2004)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The fault is intermittent, meaning it comes and goes, and it concerns the wire feeding the injection timing valve, which controls the timing of the injection. The engine control module sets the code when it finds a fault in the wire, such as a short to ground, an open circuit or a short to voltage. The fault can also lie in the injection pump.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to voltage
- Defective injection pump
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
What you can do
- 1Have a diagnostic tool? Read the code and see whether it is active right now or stored from an earlier fault
- 2Inspect the wire to the injection timing valve for breaks, chafing and shorts to ground or voltage
- 3Check the connectors at the injection timing valve for play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken or shorted to ground or voltage
- 5If the wire is sound but the fault returns, have a workshop check the injection pump and the timing valve with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp comes on
- The engine feels powerless
