What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1, the sensor after the catalytic converter. The code is set when the signal is missing or outside its permitted range, or when the sensor heater disturbs the signal. Rear oxygen sensor control is then switched off, and so is the check of the catalytic converter.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or oxidation in the sensor connector
- Open circuit in the signal or ground wire between the sensor and the engine control module
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector at the rear oxygen sensor is secure and free from corrosion and oxidation
- 3Follow the wire from the sensor and look for chafing, breaks or loose clips, especially where it runs under the car
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: watch the oxygen sensor signal in live data while the engine runs and see whether the value changes
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground and has continuity all the way from the sensor
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop decide whether the sensor needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control after the catalytic converter is switched off
- The catalytic converter cannot be checked
