What does this fault code mean?
The signal from the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1 is above its permitted range. The fault can come from the signal wire or the ground wire touching a live voltage, or from a damaged sensor. Rear oxygen sensor control after the catalytic converter is switched off for as long as the fault is present.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Ground wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 2Follow the signal wire from the sensor and look for chafe points or places where it may have touched a live wire
- 3Unplug the sensor connector and use a multimeter: voltage on the signal wire to ground with the ignition on means a short to supply
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data whether the oxygen sensor signal sticks at a high value while the engine runs
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop decide whether the sensor should be replaced
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control after the catalytic converter is switched off
- The catalytic converter cannot be checked
