What does this fault code mean?
The signal from the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1 is below its permitted range. The most common cause is the signal wire or the ground wire being shorted to ground, but a damaged sensor can also trigger the fault. Rear oxygen sensor control after the catalytic converter is switched off while the fault is present.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Ground wire short-circuited to ground
- Damaged rear oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it and clear it. Then road test to see whether it comes back
- 2Look for chafing and pinched cable on the signal wire where it may have touched the body or a metal part
- 3Disconnect the connector at the sensor and use a multimeter to confirm the signal wire has no connection to ground (the body)
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the oxygen sensor signal in live data and see whether it sticks at a low value
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop judge whether the sensor should be replaced
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
What the fault can affect2
- Rear oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are switched off
