What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) controls the heating of the rear oxygen sensor on bank 1. The code is set when the signal from the sensor is too high while heating is active. The most common cause is the signal wire touching a supply voltage, but a damaged sensor can also trigger the fault. Lambda control is switched off.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
    • Damaged oxygen sensor
    • Damaged rear oxygen sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and clear the code. Road test and see whether it returns
    2. 2Look for chafe points, loose clips and cable hanging near the exhaust system, where the signal wire may have touched a live wire
    3. 3If you have a diagnostic tool: watch the oxygen sensor signal in live data while driving and see whether it stays too high
    4. 4Do not use rust solvent spray or grease on the oxygen sensor connector
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop decide whether the sensor should be replaced

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit

    What the fault can affect1

    • Lambda control is switched off

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
