What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named turbocharger control, it concerns the gap between the actual boost pressure and the boost pressure the engine control module (ECM) has calculated. The code is set when the two differ. The cause can be a leak in the intake, poor contact in the valve wiring or a blocked hose.
Possible causes
- Loose or oxidised terminals and wiring to the turbocharger control valve
- Air leakage in the intake system
- Blocked or damaged hoses to the turbocharger or the turbocharger control valve
- The turbo position sensor does not show the correct position
- Damaged turbocharger control valve
- The vacuum hose to the charge-air cooler bypass valve is damaged or pinched
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector to the turbocharger control valve is secure and free from oxidation
- 3Make sure the hoses to the vacuum regulator and the vacuum pump are fitted correctly and are not blocked, damaged or pinched
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the turbocharger control valve and listen for it working
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: watch the turbo position sensor and boost pressure in live data during acceleration and see whether they follow each other
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the vacuum regulator and the charge-air cooler bypass valve
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction Indicator Light (Check engine light) comes on or behaves abnormally
- The engine feels weaker and lacks power
