What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) compares the signals from the accelerator pedal position sensor and the stop lamp switch. The code is set when the two do not agree with each other. The fault often shows as a text message in the display. Brakes are a safety system, so the fault should be dealt with promptly.

    Possible causes

    • Loose or oxidised terminals at the pedal sensors or stop lamp switch
    • Fault in the accelerator pedal position sensor signal
    • Fault in the stop lamp switch signal

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and first fix any codes in the brake control module (BCM), the central electronic module (CEM) and the engine control module that concern the stop lamp switch or accelerator pedal
    2. 2Check that the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal and go out when you release it
    3. 3Check that the connectors at the brake pedal and accelerator pedal are secure and free from oxidation
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: see that the stop lamp switch status changes in live data when you press and release the brake
    5. 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the stop lamp switch and the accelerator pedal sensor
    6. 6Brakes are a safety system: do not drive the car if you suspect the brake function is faulty

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • Text message and warning symbol in the display

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
