ECM-2301
VOLVO
ECM-2301 - Ignition coil 1. Signal too high
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) keeps watch over the ignition circuitry. The code is set when the signal from ignition coil 1, which feeds cylinders 1 and 4, reads too high. The fault may lie in the coil or in its primary wire, for example if that wire has touched a live supply.
Possible causes
- Primary wire has been short-circuited to supply voltage
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the connector on the ignition coil is secure and not corroded
- 3Look for chafing or a pinched cable on the primary wire where it may have touched a live part
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: watch the ignition coil 1 signal in live data while the engine runs and see whether it reads too high
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop decide whether the coil should be replaced
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
