ECM-2303 - Ignition coil 2. Signal too low
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) keeps watch over the ignition circuitry. The code is set when the signal from ignition coil 2 is too low. That coil supplies cylinders 2 and 3. The usual cause is a primary wire shorted to ground or a damaged coil.
Possible causes
- Primary wire shorted to ground
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Read the code, note it and clear it. Then road test to see whether it comes back
- 2Make sure the connector to ignition coil 2 is firmly seated and check the contacts for corrosion
- 3Inspect the primary wire to ignition coil 2 for chafing or breaks, especially where it rests against edges in the engine bay
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the ignition coil 2 signal in live data while the engine runs
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop decide whether the coil needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) lit
