What does this fault code mean?
Knock in cylinder 2 has grown more frequent than the engine control module (ECM) allows, and it then adjusts the ignition so the knock eases. The knock sensor on the engine block is what registers the combustion knock. The cause may be fuel quality, a lean mixture or an overheating engine.
Possible causes
- Engine running on a lean fuel/air mixture
- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Engine running too hot
- Intake air temperature too high
- Knock sensor fitted loosely
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the code, then road test and listen for knocking from the engine
- 2Fill up with petrol suited to the season, since the wrong fuel quality can cause knock
- 3Check that the connector to the knock sensor is secure
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: look at the ignition timing adjustment in live data and see whether it is pulled back when the engine knocks
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop judge whether the knock sensor needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance
