What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is titled signal missing, it applies when the voltage for the oxygen sensor heater disturbs the sensor signal. The ECM watches the signal from the front sensor on bank 1 and stores the code when the heater voltage affects it.
Possible causes
- Short circuit between one of the heater cables for the oxygen sensor and the sensor's other signal cables
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the oxygen sensor connector is fully engaged and clean. Do not use rust solvent spray or grease in it
- 3Follow the cables from the oxygen sensor and look for chafing and damaged insulation, especially near the exhaust pipe
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the heater cables are not short-circuited to the sensor's other signal cables
- 5If the cables are intact, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the oxygen sensor needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
What the fault can affect2
- Oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are switched off
