What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) controls the heating of the front oxygen sensor on bank 1 by pulsing the current to the sensor's PTC element, and the pulse length depends on the sensor temperature. The code is stored when the signal reads under a set threshold with the heating switched off.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the oxygen sensor connector for corrosion and loose connections. Rust solvent spray and grease must not be used on it
- 3Follow the signal cable from the oxygen sensor and look for chafing and pinch damage, especially where it may touch the body
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable is not short-circuited to ground, meaning the car body
- 5If the cable is intact but the fault remains, have a workshop try a new oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
What the fault can affect2
- Oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Fuel trim control based on the oxygen sensor is switched off
