What does this fault code mean?
The ECM has detected an internal fault in its control of the oxygen sensors. The fault is therefore in the control module, not in the sensors or the wiring. It may be temporary and already gone, or it may remain and require a new control module.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
- Temporary interference when the engine control module starts
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and start the car several times to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the battery is in good condition, since low voltage at start-up can cause temporary faults
- 3Make sure the connectors to the engine control module are fully seated and clean
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the engine control module needs replacing
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
