What does this fault code mean?
The code indicates an open circuit in the ground lead to the front oxygen sensor on bank 1, and the engine control module (ECM) stores the code when it detects the break. The sensor then lacks a working ground connection, so its signal cannot be read correctly.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the ground lead
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Make sure the sensor connector is fully engaged and clean, and look for corrosion. Do not use rust solvent spray or grease in the connector
- 3Follow the ground lead from the oxygen sensor and look for breaks, chafing and loose connections
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the ground lead has no open circuit, meaning continuity all the way from the sensor
- 5If the lead and connector are intact, have a workshop try a new oxygen sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
