What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) checks the front oxygen sensor against the rear sensor and against what it expects from the engine. If the front sensor shows only air and no fuel/air mixture, or its signal conflicts with the rear sensor or with what is expected, the code is stored. The fault can lie in the front or rear sensor circuit.
Possible causes
- Oxygen sensor fitted incorrectly in the exhaust system
- Leakage in the exhaust system
- Short circuit to supply voltage or ground in the signal cable or in the pump and calibration current cables
- Open circuit in the signal cable (+)
- Damaged front heated oxygen sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the oxygen sensor is correctly fitted in the exhaust system and that there are no leaks around it
- 3Look for air leaks in the exhaust system, such as cracks and leaking joints
- 4Follow the cables to the oxygen sensor and use a multimeter to check that they have no open circuit and are not short-circuited to supply voltage or ground
- 5If the cables are intact, have a workshop try a new oxygen sensor, since a damaged front or rear sensor can also cause the fault
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is lit
What the fault can affect3
- Oxygen sensor control is switched off
- Long-term fuel trim is switched off
- Catalytic converter diagnostics are switched off
