What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks the voltage on the system relay coil, which gets its supply through a fuse in the engine bay fuse box and is earthed inside the control unit. If that voltage is too low, the code is stored.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation at the connections
- Cable short-circuited to ground
- Damaged system relay
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuse feeding the system relay is intact
- 2Look at the connections at the relay and the control module for oxidation and loose contacts
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the cable to the relay coil is not short-circuited to ground, meaning the car body
- 4If the fuse, connectors and cables are intact, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the system relay and the control module
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine does not start
- The starter motor does not turn over
- No clicking sound when starting is attempted
