What does this fault code mean?
The ECM compares the sensor signal with a calculated engine temperature. If the signal stays static and does not match the calculated value, the code is set. It is stored together with another fault code for the coolant temperature sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connectors
- The temperature sensor is damaged
What you can do
- 1Read the other fault code for the coolant temperature sensor first and fix it
- 2Disconnect the connector to the electric cooling fan before working in the engine bay, since the fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 3Check the connector on the temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 4Check the coolant level and that the coolant has the right freeze protection, since a frozen sensor can cause this code
- 5With diagnostic equipment, read the engine temperature after starting and see whether it rises in step with warm-up
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
