What does this fault code mean?
The ECM calculates the engine temperature from the moment the engine starts and compares it with the sensor signal. If the sensor signal is below the calculated temperature, the code is set. The fault may come from a poor connection, a damaged sensor, or a thermostat that does not open.
Possible causes
- Poor contact with resistance and oxidation in the sensor connector
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- A thermostat that does not open
What you can do
- 1Disconnect the connector to the electric cooling fan before troubleshooting, since the fan can run even when the ignition is off. Reconnect it afterwards
- 2Look at the sensor connector: it should be seated firmly and clean, with no resistance or oxidation
- 3Check the coolant level and that the coolant has the right freeze protection
- 4With diagnostic equipment, read the engine temperature after starting and see whether it rises sensibly as the engine warms
- 5Have a workshop check the thermostat and replace the sensor if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
