What does this fault code mean?
The ECM reads the coolant temperature sensor signal. If it shows a temperature below a certain value, the ECM treats it as a fault and the code is set. The fault may lie in the connectors, the wires to the sensor, or the sensor itself.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Open circuit in the signal ground wire
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Disconnect the connector to the electric cooling fan before troubleshooting, so the fan does not start by itself
- 2Check the connector at the temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Start the engine and read the temperature. If it is now plausible, the connector has most likely been making poor contact
- 4Use a multimeter to check the signal and ground wires to the sensor for open circuits
- 5Have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor if the wires are intact and the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
What the fault can affect3
- Boost pressure follows a basic value
- The engine temperature is worked out by a model instead of being measured
- The electric cooling fan runs at a preset speed
