What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) works out the engine temperature after start, taking into account time since start, engine speed and load. If the sensor signal is below the calculated temperature, the code is set.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance and oxidation in the connector
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Disconnect the electric cooling fan connector before you begin, so the fan does not start by itself
- 2Check the connector on the temperature sensor for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the coolant level and freeze protection, since a frozen sensor can cause this code
- 4Have a workshop check whether the thermostat opens as it should
- 5Have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor if the connector is in good condition and the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
