What does this fault code mean?
At engine start the ECM stores the readings from the intake air, fuel and coolant temperature sensors and compares them. If the coolant temperature sensor reads too far above the others, the code is set.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
What you can do
- 1With diagnostic equipment, read the engine temperature at start and compare it with the intake air and fuel temperatures
- 2Disconnect the electric cooling fan connector before you begin, since the fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 3Check the connector on the coolant temperature sensor for looseness, oxidation and contact resistance
- 4Check that the temperature gauge shows a sensible temperature and follows warm-up
- 5Have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor if the connector is in good condition and the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
- The coolant temperature gauge shows too high a value
- The electric cooling fan runs all the time
What the fault can affect1
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model
