What does this fault code mean?
At engine start the ECM stores the readings from the intake air, fuel and coolant temperature sensors and compares them. If the coolant temperature sensor reads too far below the others, the code is set.
Possible causes
- The coolant temperature sensor is broken
- Poor contact in the connections, with resistance or oxidation
What you can do
- 1With diagnostic equipment, read the engine temperature at start and compare it with the intake air and fuel temperatures
- 2Disconnect the electric cooling fan connector before you begin, since the fan can run even when the ignition is off
- 3Check the coolant temperature sensor's connector for looseness, oxidation and contact resistance
- 4Check that the coolant level and freeze protection are in order, since a frozen sensor can read too cold
- 5Have a workshop replace the coolant temperature sensor if the connector is in good condition and the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- The engine is hard to start
What the fault can affect1
- The engine temperature is calculated using a model
