What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the pump current of the oxygen sensor. The code is set when current is detected in the pump current circuit while the sensor is cold, which points to leakage current or flashover in the wiring. The fault can also come from an internal fault in the control module.
Possible causes
- Short circuit or flashover in the pump current wires
- Fault inside the engine control module (ECM) itself
What you can do
- 1Let the car stand until cold, start the engine and see whether the code returns
- 2With the car switched off, use a multimeter to check that the pump current wires have no contact with each other or with other wires
- 3Look for chafed wires and for moisture or dirt at the oxygen sensor connector, which can cause leakage current
- 4If the wires are intact but the fault remains, have a workshop check the control module with diagnostic equipment
