What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named signal too low, the control module has calculated an incorrect temperature for the oxygen sensor from its internal resistance, and the code is set when that calculated value is wrong. Causes may be a broken or shorted signal wire, a damaged sensor, or an internal fault in the control module.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Short circuit between the signal cables
- Damaged oxygen sensor
- Fault inside the engine control module (ECM) itself
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and run the engine for a while to see whether it returns
- 2Switch off the ignition and check the oxygen sensor connections: they should be secure and free from play, contact resistance and oxidation
- 3With the car switched off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken and the two signal wires are not shorted to each other
- 4If the connections and wiring are in order but the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and the control module with diagnostic equipment
