What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module takes its fuel and air mixture information from the oxygen sensor. The code is set when the signal for oxygen content is judged incorrect, here too low. The fault is detected while the engine runs under light load. The cause may be a short to ground in the signal wire, a damaged sensor or a fault inside the control module.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Oxygen sensor damaged
- Control module has an internal fault
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and drive with light load to see whether it returns
- 2Switch off the ignition, loosen the oxygen sensor connector and check it is clean, with no play or oxidation
- 3With the car switched off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with ground
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: see in live data whether the oxygen sensor value changes while the engine runs under light load
- 5If the connector and wire are intact but the fault remains, have a workshop check the sensor and the control module with diagnostic equipment
