What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is named faulty signal, it is set when the fuel pressure does not reach the target value requested by the engine control module, even though the pressure control has hit its highest or lowest limit. The fault can be noticed while the engine runs and while it idles.
Possible causes
- Leak in the fuel lines
- Blocked fuel filter
- Contamination in the tank, such as grit or loose parts
- Damaged fuel pressure sensor
- Damaged fuel pump
- Damaged fuel pump control module
What you can do
- 1Check for stored codes for the fuel pressure sensor or the atmospheric pressure sensor, and deal with them first
- 2Make sure there is enough fuel in the tank, since a nearly empty tank can cause low fuel pressure
- 3Look for leaks in the fuel lines and check the filter for blockage
- 4Check the connectors at the fuel pressure sensor and at the pump control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the relative fuel pressure in live data with the engine warm and idling, and see whether it stays steady or drops too low
- 6If no fault is found, have a workshop try a new fuel pump, bearing in mind that a faulty pump control module or fuel pressure sensor can also cause the code
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine lacks power, especially when moving off from standstill
- Engine may stall at any time
- Engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly under acceleration and when slowing down
- Engine starts poorly or does not start at all
- Check engine lamp (Malfunction Indicator Light) comes on or behaves abnormally
