What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module controls the fuel pressure through the fuel pump control module. The code is set when the measured fuel pressure stays too low compared with the requested pressure for a certain time. The fault can be noticed while the engine runs and while it idles.
Possible causes
- Leakage at the fuel lines
- Blocked fuel filter
- Debris or loose particles inside the fuel tank
- Damaged fuel pressure sensor
- Damaged fuel pump
- Damaged fuel pump control module
What you can do
- 1Look up stored codes for the pressure sensors on the fuel and atmosphere side, and deal with those first
- 2Make sure the fuel level is not nearly empty, as there may then be too little fuel at the pump
- 3Look for leaks in the fuel lines and check that the fuel filter is not clogged
- 4Check the connectors at the fuel pressure sensor and at the pump control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: read the relative fuel pressure in live data with the engine warm and idling, and compare it with the target value the control module shows
- 6If no cause is found, have a workshop try a new fuel pump and check whether the fault clears
Symptoms you may notice5
- Engine lacks power, especially when moving off from standstill
- Engine may stall at any time
- Engine hesitates or surges when holding a steady speed
- Engine is hard to start or does not start at all
- Check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally
