What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module controls the fuel pressure through the fuel pump control module using a PWM signal. The code is stored when that PWM signal is missing, which can point to a damaged pump control module, a break or short in the signal wire, or a fault in the supply or ground to the control module and pump.

    Possible causes

    • Signal cable shorted to supply voltage
    • Damaged fuel pump control module
    • Break in the signal cable linking the engine control module to the pump control module
    • Poor contact, oxide or loose fit in the connectors and connections
    • Damaged earth connection to the pump control module and fuel pump

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pump load in live data with the engine warm and idling. A missing or wrong value points to a lasting fault
    2. 2Check the voltage supply to the pump control module and pump, including the relay and fuse
    3. 3Check that the earth connection to the pump control module and pump is secure and clean
    4. 4Check the connector at the pump control module for contact resistance and oxide
    5. 5Trace the signal wire from the engine control module to the pump control module, looking for breaks and for shorts to ground or voltage

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Starter turns, but the engine does not fire
    • Engine stops
    • Engine lacks power, especially when moving off
    • Engine hesitates, surges or runs unevenly under acceleration and when slowing down
    • Check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
