What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) requests fuel pressure from the fuel pump control module through a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal, and that module then drives the pump to match the request. The code is set when the signal between the two modules is too high. It can only be read while the engine is running.
Possible causes
- Signal wire between the ECM and the fuel pump control module shorted to supply voltage
- Damaged fuel pump control module
- Damaged supply wire to the fuel pump control module
- Poor contact, oxidation or looseness in connectors and joints
- Damaged fuel pump or damaged ground connection to the pump
What you can do
- 1Find out whether the fault is permanent or intermittent; if the engine runs normally now, the fault is likely temporary
- 2Inspect the plugs at the fuel pump control module for oxidation and poor contact
- 3Check the power feed to the fuel pump control module and the pump itself, including the relay and fuse
- 4Check the ground connection to the pump control module and the fuel pump
- 5Read the codes in the central electronic module, as this code is often a knock-on effect of electrical faults, and check the signal wire with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- The engine does not start even though the starter motor turns
- The engine stalls
- Lack of power and poor performance, especially when starting off
- Jerky running, hesitation or surging on acceleration or deceleration
- Engine warning lamp (Check Engine) lit
