What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module controls the fuel pressure by sending a PWM signal to the fuel pump control module. The code is stored when that signal is too low, which can come from a signal wire shorted to ground, a damaged pump control module, or a damaged ground or power supply to the pump control module and pump.

    Possible causes

    • Signal wire shorted to ground
    • Damaged fuel pump control module
    • Damaged power supply cable to the pump control module
    • Damaged earth connection to the pump control module and pump
    • Poor contact, oxide or high resistance at the connectors
    • Cable between the pump control module and the fuel pump shorted to voltage or ground

    What you can do

    1. 1If you have a diagnostic tool: read the fuel pump load in live data with the engine warm and idling. A value that is wrong or missing points to a lasting fault
    2. 2Check that the earth connection to the pump control module and pump is secure and clean
    3. 3Check the connector at the pump control module for contact resistance and oxide
    4. 4With the car switched off, use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground
    5. 5Check the voltage supply to the pump control module, including the relay and fuse
    6. 6If no fault is found, have a workshop try a new fuel pump control module

    Symptoms you may notice5

    • Starter turns, but the engine does not fire
    • Engine stops
    • Engine lacks power, especially when moving off
    • Engine hesitates or surges when holding a steady speed
    • Check engine lamp comes on or behaves abnormally

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
