What does this fault code mean?
The ECM watches the temperature in the exhaust system and compares the sensors upstream of the catalytic converter and the particulate trap. The fault code is set when the temperature difference between them is too large.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Damaged temperature sensor for the catalytic converter
- Damaged temperature sensor for the particulate trap
What you can do
- 1With a diagnostic tool, compare both sensor temperatures in live data when warm. The catalyst sensor usually reads a little higher
- 2Check the connectors at both temperature sensors for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the sensor wiring for open circuits and chafing
- 4Clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
- 5Have a workshop measure the sensor resistances and replace the faulty sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- A message appears in the information display
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
