What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) compares the calculated temperature rise with the actual rise measured by the engine coolant temperature sensor. The fault code is set when they differ, which can be caused by a damaged thermostat or coolant temperature sensor.
Possible causes
- Damaged engine coolant temperature sensor
- Damaged thermostat
What you can do
- 1Check the coolant level, as a low level can let the coolant temperature sensor freeze and set the code
- 2Check that the coolant antifreeze mix is adequate, as too little glycol can also make the sensor freeze
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the engine coolant temperature in live data from start-up and see that it rises steadily as the engine warms up
- 4Read fault codes from other control modules. If codes for the outside temperature sensor are stored, trace those first
- 5If the fault remains, have a workshop check the thermostat and the coolant temperature sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) comes on
