What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from the camshaft sensor. The fault code is set when the module receives no signal from the sensor, or when the signal is faulty or does not match the engine speed sensor signal.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Breaks in the wiring to the camshaft sensor
- Short circuit in the wiring to the camshaft sensor
- Camshaft sensor fitted incorrectly
- Damaged camshaft sensor
- Defective engine speed sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Check the camshaft sensor connector for contact resistance, play and oxidation
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: see whether engine speed shows in live data during a start attempt, to identify the suspect sensor
- 4Check that the camshaft sensor is correctly fitted in terms of its mounting and position
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the wires to the camshaft sensor have no open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage
- 6If these checks find nothing, have a workshop replace the camshaft sensor
