What does this fault code mean?
The camshaft position sensor reports the camshaft position relative to the flywheel, and the control module checks that the signal matches. If it does not, the code is stored. The cause may be a fault in the sensor or the trigger wheel, an open circuit in the wiring, incorrectly adjusted camshafts, or a timing belt that has jumped teeth.
Possible causes
- Faulty signal from the camshaft position sensor
- Temporary open circuit in the wiring or in splices
- Incorrectly adjusted camshafts
- Defective camshaft position sensor or engine speed sensor
- Defective trigger wheel
- Timing belt has jumped off the cogs
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, start the engine and check whether the code returns
- 2Check that the camshaft position sensor connector is secure and free from corrosion
- 3Follow the wiring from the camshaft position sensor and look for chafing or loose wires
- 4Has the timing belt or the camshafts been changed recently? Valve timing may then be wrong, and a workshop should check it
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the camshaft position sensor signal follows the engine speed when the engine runs
- 6If the fault returns: have a workshop check the camshaft position sensor and the trigger wheel (the reluctor on the camshaft)
Symptoms you may notice3
- The engine dies
- The engine is difficult to start or fails to start
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect3
- The control module uses the engine speed sensor signal as long as it works
- Boost pressure is set to its basic level
- Fuel supply may be cut off in some conditions
