What does this fault code mean?
In certain operating conditions the control module compares the signal from the front knock sensor. If the signal is too high, the code is stored, and this can be checked while the engine runs. An unusual noise from the engine or a knock sensor that is not properly tightened can cause a signal that is too high.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Noise from the engine
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Incorrectly installed knock sensor
- Damaged temperature sensor
What you can do
- 1Read and clear the fault code, run the engine and check whether it returns
- 2Check that the front knock sensor is firmly fitted to the engine
- 3Start the engine and listen for unusual noise, which can affect the knock sensor signal
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the signal from the front knock sensor is steady with the engine idling
- 5Follow the signal wire from the front knock sensor and look for chafing or connectors that are loose
- 6Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire has no contact with the battery positive lead, and have a workshop check the sensor if the fault remains
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition advance is pulled back to protect the engine
- Boost pressure is reduced
