What does this fault code mean?
Under certain operating conditions the control module monitors the front knock sensor signal. If the signal is too low, the code is stored, and it can be checked while the engine runs. Poor contact at the sensor connection or a broken signal wire are common causes of a signal that is too weak.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor terminals
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Short circuit between the knock sensor signal wires
- Damaged knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Check the knock sensor connector for poor contact and oxidation, and make sure it is firmly seated
- 2Check that the knock sensor is firmly fitted to the engine
- 3Read and clear the fault code, run the engine and check whether it returns
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool, check in live data that the knock signal changes when the engine is briefly revved
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken and has no contact with ground
- 6If the fault remains after the wiring has been checked, have a workshop replace or check the knock sensor
Symptoms you may notice1
- Poor performance
What the fault can affect2
- Ignition advance is pulled back to protect the engine
- Boost pressure is reduced
