What does this fault code mean?
The control module compares the engine speed from the crankshaft speed sensor with the speed calculated from the camshaft position sensor. If the crankshaft speed sensor reads lower than the camshaft sensor, the control module treats it as a fault, and the code is stored while the engine runs. The cause may be broken wiring, poor contact, or a damaged speed sensor or trigger wheel.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the signal or ground wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Damaged engine speed sensor
- Damaged trigger wheel on the crankshaft
What you can do
- 1Read the fault status with the engine running and check whether the fault is still present when the test has finished
- 2Check that the connectors to the engine speed sensor and camshaft position sensor are secure and free from oxidation
- 3Check that the engine speed sensor and camshaft position sensor are correctly fitted
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wires to the engine speed sensor are not broken and have no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 5If the fault remains: have a workshop check the trigger wheel on the crankshaft and the engine speed sensor
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine cranks but will not fire
- The engine stops
