What does this fault code mean?
The control module counts the teeth on the flywheel or trigger plate using the engine speed sensor signal when the engine starts. If it finds the wrong number of teeth over a few crankshaft revolutions, the code is stored. The cause may be a temporary disturbance in the signal, an open or short circuit in the wiring, poor contact, or a speed sensor that is incorrectly fitted or damaged.
Possible causes
- Temporary faults in the engine speed sensor signal
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground or supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Engine speed sensor incorrectly fitted or damaged
- Engine speed too high
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and check whether the engine speed sensor is active; codes for other sensors may be shown at the same time
- 2Check that the engine speed sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation
- 3Check that the engine speed sensor is correctly fitted and that the wiring is not chafed
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire is not broken and has no contact with ground or supply voltage
- 5Have a workshop replace the engine speed sensor if the fault remains after these checks
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
- Message in the display
What the fault can affect1
- The control module uses the camshaft position sensor signal if it is working
