What does this fault code mean?
This fault is registered as intermittent, meaning it has been present at some point but may no longer be there. The control module treats it as a fault when the signal wire to the ignition coil for cylinder three is shorted to ground or broken and the engine speed is above a set level. The engine warning lamp may light.
Possible causes
- Signal wire short-circuited to supply voltage
- Signal wire short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the fault status: No fault detected confirms that the fault is not active at the moment
- 2Look over the ignition coil plug: check it is firmly seated and free from oxidation
- 3With the engine off, look for chafing and loose splices in the wire to the ignition coil
- 4Use a multimeter to check that the wire is not broken and has no contact with ground
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop check the ignition coil and the wire
