What does this fault code mean?
The cylinder 5 ignition coil fault is stored as intermittent: it has occurred but may not be present now. The control module reacts when the signal wire to the coil is grounded or broken while the engine revs up. The result is that the engine does not fire on all cylinders.
Possible causes
- Signal wire briefly shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire that only occurs now and then
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns as the engine runs at higher speeds
- 2Check that the cylinder 5 ignition coil connector is fully seated and free from oxidation
- 3Follow the cable from the cylinder 5 coil and look for chafing or pinched sections
- 4With the connector disconnected and the wire free, use a multimeter to check there is no contact with ground or with battery positive
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop check the coil and the wiring with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine not firing on all cylinders
- Malfunction indicator (emissions lamp) is lit
