Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (1999–2006), XC90 (2003–)
What does this fault code mean?
The signal to the cylinder 6 ignition coil is stored as intermittent. This means the fault may have happened before and is not active at the moment. The code is set when the wire to the coil is shorted to ground or has an open circuit while the engine runs at higher speeds, and the engine then misfires.
Possible causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Open circuit in the signal wire
- Signal wire shorted to supply voltage
- Contact resistance in the connections
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it comes back
- 2Check the connector at the cylinder 6 ignition coil: it should be fully seated and clean
- 3Follow the wire to the cylinder 6 coil and look for broken, pinched or chafed sections
- 4Use a multimeter to check whether the wire touches the body or the battery positive lead
- 5If the fault returns, have a workshop check the coil and the control module with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice2
- Engine not firing on all cylinders
- Malfunction indicator (emissions lamp) is lit
