What does this fault code mean?
The knock sensor listens for knock in the engine, and the control module compares its signal with limits that depend on engine speed and load. If the signal rises above those limits, meaning too much roar, the code is stored. The fault therefore concerns the signal from the sensor.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the knock sensor connector
- Defective knock sensor
What you can do
- 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the knock sensor connector is secure and free from oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the knock sensor wire has no contact with ground or battery positive
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in live data that the knock signal follows engine speed
- 5If the connector is clean but the fault remains, have a workshop replace the knock sensor with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine gives poorer performance
What the fault can affect2
- Knock control in the engine is disabled
- Ignition timing is retarded for safety reasons
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
