What does this fault code mean?

The signal from the rear knock sensor is too low. The control module checks the signal against limits that depend on engine speed, and the code is set when the signal falls outside them.

    Possible causes

    • Contact resistance in the connector
    • Defective knock sensor

    What you can do

    1. 1Clear the code and road test the car to see whether it returns
    2. 2Check the rear knock sensor connector: fully seated, clean and free from oxidation
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire to the rear knock sensor is intact
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: see whether the knock signal in live data changes as engine speed rises
    5. 5If the connector is clean but the fault remains, have a workshop fit a new knock sensor

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine performs worse

    What the fault can affect2

    • Knock control is disabled
    • Ignition timing is retarded for safety reasons

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
