What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has detected that the signal to the ignition coil for cylinder 4 is too low. The coil then does not receive the control it needs to ignite the mixture in that cylinder, so the engine can misfire there. The fault concerns the signal wire and the coil, and the connector at the coil is a good first thing to check.
Possible causes
- The signal wire to the ignition coil is short-circuited to ground
- Damaged ignition coil
What you can do
- 1Check that the connector at ignition coil 4 is fully seated and free from corrosion
- 2Follow the signal wire from the coil and look for chafing, pinch damage or places where it may touch the body
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the coil has no contact with ground (the body), with the connector unplugged at the coil
- 4Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 5If the wire is intact: have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the ignition coil
Symptoms you may notice2
- The malfunction indicator lamp is on
- Cylinder 4 is not firing properly, so the engine runs roughly
